The term “cloud” was not commonly used until the late 1990s, so finding the first article about cloud architecture may be difficult. However, it is believed that an internal document of Compaq in 1996 was the first document about cloud computing. On the other hand, the first academic mention of the cloud was made by Professor Ramnath Chellappa from Emory University in 1997. This indicates that the term “cloud” was initially used in the context of computing in the late 1990s. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
Cloud computing evolved from earlier concepts such as grid computing and utility computing. These earlier concepts involved the use of distributed computing resources and the provision of computing as a utility, similar to other utilities such as electricity and water. Cloud computing builds on these earlier concepts by providing a more flexible and scalable approach to computing, enabled by advancements in networking and virtualization technologies. (IBM, 2021)
